"Skeena Skiffle"

Skeena Skiffle - Prince Rupert/Terrace BC

Recently, the UK has seen a  revival of The Skiffle craze that swept across Britain in the late 1950's. Originally prompted by Lonnie Donegan, Skiffle influenced many well known artists, including The Beatles. The songs were mainly folk and country, played energetically in a characteristic shuffle rhythm. Instruments were often improvised, so that just about anybody could play, and countless garage bands sprung up with their tea-chest or wash-tub basses and washboard percussion.

Skeena Skiffle brings the Skiffle revival to Northwest BC. James Powell, of Terrace's Dr. Fishy, sings and plays his "Slapshot Bass" fashioned from a bass drum, a hockey stick, a 45 degree 4” ABS bend and a length of weed-whacker cord. He also plays a mean blade-of-grass solo in the true spirit of the genre. Cynthia Pyde from Prince Rupert's Celtic Rain sings and plays washboard and a variety of other percussion implements. Ray Leonard, also of Celtic Rain, sings and plays acoustic guitar. Ray’s voice has been likened to that of the great Lonnie Donegan himself.. The trio has played several festivals in BC, and the fun they have on stage never fails to infect and enthuse their audience.
